The prevalent idea is that an excess intake of calories, meaning consuming more calories than you burn on average, leads to an increase in body fat. This logic is flawed. Calories are a unit of energy and not a nutrient, they have no physical form unlike, for example, fat which is essentially a long string of carbons with hydrogens attached to them.
